(1998) Music for Guitar
«I am particularly pleased to begin this CD with Jean Françaix’s Passacaille. This piece consists of a series of variations (written with typical French elegance) on a profoundly inspired theme that the composer explores with virtuosity rich in contrasts.» These words are by the young Italian guitarist Emanuele Segre, to whom Françaix(who died in 1997) dedicated this composition.

The following compositions by Poulenc, Roussel, Milhaud and Auric are the only works for this instrument by these French composers. This is not the case for Heitor Villa-Lobos, who composed a good deal of music for the guitar, nor for Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who wrote with great freedom for this instrument, employing new techniques and sonorities; his recently discovered transcriptions of works by Debussy and Ravel illustrate the eclectic character of his music.
